In 1853, the California gold rush was in full swing. Young people and some older ones were traveling down to California to prospect for Gold, hoping to be lucky with Gold and thus rich. While some were indeed lucky, a good number were only on a wild goose chase as they wasted their time and resources but not finding any gold.

Levi Strauss, a 24-year-old German immigrant, also left New York for San Francisco but not to prospect for Gold but to provide much needed goods required by the Gold prospectors including work clothes and other dry goods. It was during this period that he partnered with Jacob Davis, a Nevada tailor, to invent his own Gold- the Blue Gold, the Denim Jeans that we all wear today. The Gold prospectors preferred it because of how strong it was and the copper rivets used to strengthen the pocket.

While every other person dug for Gold, they invented their own Gold by looking at things from a fresh perspective, a whole new dimension! Today that same company has sold billions of dollars worth of Jeans.

Look at things from a different perspective, from a new perspective. You need not join the GOLD RUSH!

Invent your own Gold.

Expand your horizon. Broaden your mind.

Keep Hope Alive!

Intro:

In my country, Nigeria, every other patent Medicine dealer attributes any febrile illness to Malaria or Typhoid fever. It is common place for even some “Medical practitioners” to jump to the Diagnosis of Malaria or Typhoid with neither conclusive clinical nor laboratory evidence, because it is a common place ailment here. Yet at a time, Typhoid fever was a deadly disease, leaving several of its victims dead.

Notable historical figures like Pericles of Athens and whole armies and cities have been wiped out by Typhoid in the past but today, the disease causes less deaths because of better sanitary conditions and proper antibiotics.

Typhoid is of Public health importance as outbreaks can be devastating especially in epidemic proportions.
An outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2004–05 recorded more than 42,000 cases and 214 deaths

I found an interesting story of Mary Mallon, a woman that was linked to the illness and even death of about 53 people through transmission of Typhoid disease and I have shared below.

TYPHOID MARY:

Mary Mallon (September 23, 1869 – November 11, 1938), also known as Typhoid Mary, was the first person in the United States identified as a healthy carrier of the pathogen associated with typhoid fever. She was presumed to have infected some 53 people, three of whom died, over the course of her career as a cook. She was forcibly quarantined twice by public health authorities, and died after nearly three decades altogether in quarantine.

Mary Mallon was born in 1869 in Cookstown, County Tyrone, Ireland, UK (now Northern Ireland). She immigrated to the United States in 1884. From 1900 to 1907 she worked as a cook in the New York City area.

In 1900, she had been working in a house in Mamaroneck, New York, for under two weeks when the residents developed typhoid fever. She moved to Manhattan in 1901, and members of the family for whom she worked developed fevers and diarrhea and the laundress died. She then went to work for a lawyer until seven of the eight household members developed typhoid; Mary spent months helping to care for the people she made sick, but her care further spread the disease through the household.[citation needed] In 1906, she took a position in Oyster Bay, Long Island. Within two weeks, six of eleven family members were hospitalized with typhoid. She changed employment again, and similar occurrences happened in three more households.

When typhoid researcher George Soper approached Mallon about her possible role spreading typhoid, she adamantly rejected his request for urine and stool samples. Soper left and later published the report in June, 1907, in the Journal of the American Medical Association.[2] On his next contact with her, he brought a doctor with him, but was turned away again. Mallon’s denials that she was a carrier were based in part on the diagnosis of a reputable chemist who had found her to not harbor the bacteria. Moreover, when Soper first told her she was a carrier, the concept of a healthy carrier of a pathogen was not commonly known. Further, class prejudice and prejudice towards the Irish were strong in the period, as was the belief that slum-dwelling immigrants were a major cause of epidemics. During a later encounter in the hospital, he told Mary that he would write a book about her and give her all the royalties; she angrily rejected his proposal and locked herself in the bathroom until he left.

The New York City Health Department sent Dr. Sara Josephine Baker to talk to Mary, but “by that time she was convinced that the law was only persecuting her when she had done nothing wrong.”[3] A few days later, Baker arrived at Mary’s workplace with several police officers who took her into custody. The New York City health inspector determined her to be a carrier. Under sections 1169 and 1170 of the Greater New York Charter, Mallon was held in isolation for three years at a clinic located on North Brother Island.

It is believed that individuals can develop typhoid fever after ingesting food or water contaminated during handling by a human carrier. The human carrier is usually a healthy person who has survived a previous episode of typhoid fever yet who continues to shed the associated bacteria, Salmonella typhi, in feces and urine. It takes vigorous scrubbing and thorough disinfection with soap and hot water to remove the bacteria from the hands.[citation needed]

Eventually, the New York State Commissioner of Health, Eugene H. Porter, M.D., decided that disease carriers would no longer be held in isolation. Mallon could be freed if she agreed to abandon working as a cook and to take reasonable steps to prevent transmitting typhoid to others. On February 19, 1910, Mallon agreed that she “[was] prepared to change her occupation (that of cook), and would give assurance by affidavit that she would upon her release take such hygienic precautions as would protect those with whom she came in contact, from infection”. She was released from quarantine and returned to the mainland.

She had been given a job as a laundress, which paid lower wages, however. Mallon adopted the pseudonym Mary Brown, returned to her previous occupation as a cook, and in 1915 was believed to have infected 25 people, resulting in one death, while working as a cook at New York’s Sloane Hospital for Women. Public-health authorities again found and arrested Mallon, returned to quarantine on the island on March 27, 1915. Mallon was confined there for the remainder of her life. She became something of a minor celebrity, and was interviewed by journalists, who were forbidden to accept even a glass of water from her. Later, she was allowed to work as a technician in the island’s laboratory.

Mallon spent the rest of her life in quarantine. Six years before her death, she was paralyzed by a stroke. On November 11, 1938, aged 69, she died of pneumonia. An autopsy found evidence of live typhoid bacteria in her gallbladder. It is possible that she was born with the infection, as her mother had typhoid fever during her pregnancy. Her body was cremated, and the ashes were buried at Saint Raymond’s Cemetery in the Bronx

Prevention of Typhoid spread

Sanitation and hygiene are the critical measures that can be taken to prevent typhoid. Typhoid does not affect animals and therefore transmission is only from human to human. Typhoid can only spread in environments where human feces or urine are able to come into contact with food or drinking water.
Careful food preparation and washing of hands are crucial to preventing typhoid.
It is amazing how simple steps like washing the hands before meals and after using the toilet can help.

Prompt treatment with appropriate Antibiotics and Re-hydration with ORS or IV fluids, helps reduce morbidity and mortality. The Re-hydration is particularly important in Children, especially when they are losing a lot of fluid by stooling and vomiting.

Just as Typhoid,Malaria, TB and some other diseases had at a point wiped out whole populations and served as a source of terror, but today is under control, I believe that the day approaches when Medical Science shall put a leash on the reign of terror of HIV/AIDS

Stay Healthy to Keep Hope Alive!

Hi

I wish you a wonderful month this March. To fly off in victory this march, I bring you the Inspiring story of a young woman who quit her lucrative job and great aspirations in UK to come home to Nigeria, to make a definite impact. Read and be inspired. Keep Hope alive!

England’s Youngest Doctor Becomes Nigeria’s Flying Doctor

“It was estimated in 1995, that 21,000 Nigerian doctors were practicing in the United States alone, which is about the same as the number of doctors working in the Nigerian public service. There are another 8,000 -10,000 working in the UK.

The medical profession is unique in that it is one of the few professions that, after six hard years of study, is respected, low-risk and that provides and almost guaranteed six-figure salary after specialisation in most of the developed world.

It is therefore not difficult to see why our Nigerian trained doctors are drifting abroad by the hoards in search of better working conditions, job security and of course that sizeable pay packet.

Therefore, it is particularly commendable that Dr Ola Orekunrin, born and bred in England has decided to return to Nigeria to incite change in our healthcare system. Dr Ola Orekunrin is 23 years old and wrote her final medical examinations at 21, emerging as one of the youngest medical doctors in the whole of England. Since then she has published her first book and received many post-graduate training accolades in the fields of trauma and emergency medicine. Last year she was selected from over 100 applicants for the prestigious MEXT fellowship in Tokyo, Japan.

Her company, Flying Doctors Nigeria is the first air ambulance service in the whole of West Africa and is quoted as being “one of the most important healthcare innovations in Nigeria this decade”.

There will be no rescue, no intervention for us. We can only save ourselves. Many of you know influential people abroad, you must call
these people. You must tell them what will happen to us… say goodbye. But when you say goodbye, say it as if you are reaching through
the phone and holding their hand. Let them know that if they let go of that hand, you will die. We must shame them into sending help.

Paul Rusesabagina (Hotel Rwanda, 2004)

“That was the quote that did it for me” CEO Dr Orekunrin said.

“Every time I saw reports about Nigeria on the TV or read about them in magazines, I felt that same sense of shame, knowing that I had the skills and knowledge to make a difference”.

“But it wasn’t until my sister died at just 12 years old in Nigeria and I found myself being able to give better healthcare advice over the phone, than could be given in a tertiary Nigerian hospital, that , that same sense of shame pushed me to be that difference”.

“So I quit my job, said goodbye to my political aspirations, president of the BMA, minister for the conservative party, sold my car and my house, and brought my one way ticket to Lagos … change bound”.

INTRO:

Recently, my Aunt asked my little cousin, “Baby, check the wall clock and tell me what time it is”. The chubby little man replied instantly without bothering to check “Mum, it’s time for lunch!” We all burst into uncontrollable fits of laughter but it was clear the boy had made his point. He didn’t know if it was 12noon, 2pm, or 6am. All he knew was that lunch be served. Nothing else mattered.

This event reminded me of my early French lessons in secondary school. My Benin republic born French teacher would always ask us “QUELLE HEURE EST-IL?” (What time is it?). Just like my little cousin, my colleagues and I had different versions of answers. While some answers brought smiles to Mon Francais Professeur’s face, the other answers like “It’s time for break” only infuriated him. Today, I put this same question to you, but I urge you not to answer too quickly in the manner of my cute petite cousin. Wait till you finish reading this article before you give your answer. For we all are in varying times & seasons in our individual lives & experiences, so our answers may differ a bit.

THE TIMES OF LIFE:

In my secondary school days, though I majored in the sciences, I loved Literature-in-English and the subject loved me in return for I won consistent awards as the best English & literature student with A1s to boot in both subjects. It was at this stage of my life that I studied, LION & JEWEL, a masterpiece by Nigerian born Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka. I observed that though the story seemed to have lasted a lifetime, but by a dint of literary genius, the white haired wizard of words had divided the novel into 3 periods viz Morning, Noon and Night.

For the purposes of this article, I wish to divide a person’s life into those 3 stages:

MORNING: 1-25years

AFTERNOON: 26-50yrs

EVENING/NIGHT: 51-75yrs.

EXTRA TIME: >75yrs.

MORNING: 1-25yrs The Mornings are usually bright with few exceptions. The sun shines on our hopes and our aspirations glow. At this level we dream of a bright future and give no place to cynics and pessimistic entities who will otherwise rob us of our enthusiasm, fire and passion. The Mornings are also times of self-discovery, preparation, times of intense learning and equipping for the future. It’s during this period that we go to all sorts of schools, Universities, Institutions. Some also get to learn trades as apprentices. PAY the price in the morning so that you can PLAY later. It’s always better for a man to bear his burden in the days of his youth for fellows who play away their mornings suddenly find themselves racing against time laden with grief and regrets. This might be your case but don’t give up entirely. Keep Hope Alive!

AFTERNOON: 26-50yrs.
The Afternoons are periods of work, work and more work. Anytime you come across a young person sleeping in the afternoon, the first thought that races across your mind is “Is that fellow alright?”

The Afternoon presents you opportunity to put your energy, skills and training gathered in the morning to work. The Sun may beat down hard on you and intense pressures of family, work and tight schedules may press you but hey! you are still young, full of life, zeal, zest, vibrant, enthusiastic and invincible.

However, a wise man in his afternoon will realize that it won’t always be that way. He will make plans & investments for the times of his life when he can no longer work as hard as he did in the afternoon. The Afternoon also is usually more financially rewarding than the mornings. Most of the income is active though, directly related to work but a wise man works to convert some of it to passive income via investments so that his resources can work for him, when he no longer has the energy to work.

The consequences of not working in the afternoon can be dire. Usually one that does little or no work may soon find himself laboring late into the evening/night when he ought to be resting.

One of the most uncomfortable sites I have seen is when elderly men do laborious work like truck pushing, Motor Park tout or even Security men & drivers for younger folks, as young as their grandchildren. It’s not usually a pretty sight as at that point they lack the energy & drive for that. Their zeal is gone & their zest exhausted.

I used to know an elderly night watchman who usually slept on duty only to wake in the mornings to rush to another work. Needless to say, he slept through most of the day time work too. It was quite saddening for me and even sadder when his restless life was ended by a careless accident. As Master Jesus said when He was on earth, “I must work while it’s day, for night cometh when no man can work”.

EVENING/NIGHT: 51-75yrs.

Having read the earlier portions of this article, you surely have an idea of what the evening looks like.

By evening, the sun is setting. The glow is rapidly dimming and the energy is really going down. It’s time to rest a bit. The Evening times are usually for times when you advise, counsel, mentor and younger folk consult with you as an elder. In such periods, you reap the fruits of your labor in your family, work, finances, society and otherwise. The Institutions and companies you have helped established speak for you.

The Evening times are hardly for intense work but many who wasted their mornings and afternoons have to consistently work hard in the evening to sustain themselves. The disadvantage in this is that they find it hard to remain competitive in a society filled with smarter, more innovative, more energetic young people. For instance, in today’s corporate world, the young are more technologically oriented. The new dotcom media and web 2.0 are exploited more by younger folks. Older typists and secretaries in offices are being replaced by younger computer-savvy ones as the rules of the game keeps changing to a more Information and technology oriented pace.

QUELLE HEURE EST-IL?

Once again, I ask my friend, what time is it? What time is it in your own life? Morning, Afternoon, Evening. Whichever stage you are, Keep Hope Alive! If you have wasted some portions of life, it’s not too late to make amends. If you are still in your Mornings, don’t loaf about. No slacking. Don’t be slothful. MAXIMIZE THE MOMENT and KEEP HOPE ALIVE!
